An Innovative Light Fixture Featuring ACRYLITE® by Daniel Glenn Wins Best of Show

Daniel Glenn, a Boston, Massachusetts based designer participated in the Fine Furnishings Show for the first time this past year. The juried event has been held in Providence, Rhode Island since 1996.

Glenn debuted an original design called the Virga Lamp. His goal was to create a reading lamp in which every element served as an integral element in the overall design. “The singular characteristics of the ‘ACRYLITE® LED light guiding edge lit rod’ made this possible, says Glenn. “Conventional lamps are usually fashioned as a light source surrounded by a decorative housing. This lamp is designed so every part of the structure is essential to the function of the lamp.”

As a reading lamp, Glenn knew the necessity was for light to illuminate evenly without glare or hotspots. ACRYLITE® LED light guiding edge lit rod features light-diffusing characteristics unmatched by ordinary acrylics, making it the perfect choice for his design. The formulation of invisible scattering particles in the edge lit rod created a spread of beautiful uniform illumination.

Participants in the show were judged by Miguel Gomez-Ibanez, furniture maker and former President of the North Bennet Street School in Boston, MA. The Virga Lamp won in the category of “Furniture—Craftsmanship—Contemporary.” A design goal of Glenn’s was to ensure the lamp was visually pleasing when off as well. “ACRYLITE® has the correct characteristics for the aesthetic effect desired, since it is more transparent than glass and appears water-clear when the internal light source is unpowered,” says Glenn.
