Calculation for Center Loads

Calculate the estimated thickness of ACRYLITE® acrylic required to support a point load on the center of a rectangular flat plate. The calculator assumes simply four-sided supported edges and small deflections.

Examples for the use of this calculator would include:

  • A need to check what happens if there is a point load in the center. For instance, if a person pushes against the center of a window or barrier.
  • When a panel is supported on four sides with an object placed in the middle, like a four-sided supported shelf.

Assumptions

  1. Sheet is simply supported on all four edges.
  2. Weight is concentrated at panel center in a very small circle with radius half of the panel thickness.
  3. Dimensions are open area; do not include supported areas.
  4. Maximum acceptable deflection is 5% of the width "b" or 3 inches, whichever is less.
  5. Max allowable continuous stress < tensile strength to prevent stress crazing and creep failure.
  6. Results most accurate for deflections less than half of the sheet thickness. Request the Extended Calculator at the bottom of this page for additional Technical References.
