Interactive ACRYLITE®: A Fusion of Art and Light

Illuminating Artistry: The Journey of Jamie Barrett (a.k.a FUTURETRO) with ACRYLITE® acrylic.

Known by his alias, FUTURETRO carefully creates interactive sculptures that captivate audiences with their dynamic play of light and sound. His artistic roots trace back to his early passion for painting and working in his grandfather's carpentry workshop. From his grandfather, he inherited not only woodworking techniques and tools but also a love for craftsmanship. His artistic inspiration is further influenced by nature and spirituality, a direct outcome of his time spent living on the Caribbean Island of Grenada.

Discovering the Possibilities of ACRYLITE®

After years of experimenting with ACRYLITE® acrylic, FUTURETRO gained a deep understanding of its diverse properties through continuous processing trials. ACRYLITE® acrylic provided him with newfound flexibility in shaping, experimenting with colors, and exploring unique design possibilities, making it his preferred medium for his art. He reflects, "It was a groundbreaking addition to my art, offering the ability to shape it akin to wood, while also providing distinct advantages such as its lightweight nature, optical properties, vibrant colors, and varied surface textures."

Transforming Rigid Acrylic into Organic Sculptures

The sculptures unique shapes and designs are made possible by the thermoplastic properties of ACRYLITE® acrylic, which can be turned into fascinating forms with the application of heat. The creative process in his studio is described as a dance with the material. Custom tools, including heat and cold air guns, became an essential part of his artistic toolkit.

FUTURETRO prefers to work alone, allowing himself to fully engage with the flow, performing intricate steps to bring his complicated sculptures to life. "People who only recognize acrylic from retail displays are amazed at how this rigid, two-dimensional material can be turned into such organic sculptures,” says FUTURETRO.

A Symphony of Light and Form

The true advantage of ACRYLITE® acrylic lies in its interaction with light. The material's stability after forming, coupled with its interaction with light, sets it apart from alternatives like glass. FUTURETRO's sculptures come alive as the material absorbs and emits light frequencies almost without any reflection losses. The LED’s paired with the acrylic create a visual symphony that goes beyond the limitations of traditional artistic mediums.
