Transparent Protective Shield

Display cases are designed to protect exhibits while presenting them in an appealing way. ACRYLITE® acrylic even protects the valuable objects from ultraviolet rays.

Sweaty fingers, sharp objects, sunlight – there are many potential dangers for precious exhibits. That is why museums and private collectors often protect their exhibits in display cases. The materials from which these display cases are made need to offer the necessary properties for protection.

Display cases: transparent presentation

“Display cases need to grant a clear view of the exhibit; therefore, the case itself should be barely visible. Our acrylic is ideal for this, as it is highly transparent and absolutely colorless.” explains Denise Gündling, Junior Market Segment Manager at Roehm. ACRYLITE® acrylic allows art to be seen without any distortion and shows off the exhibits exactly as they should look, brilliant and unaltered.

Thanks to the natural UV-stability of ACRYLITE® acrylic, display cases made from our material retain this outstanding, look long-term. “Other transparent plastics start to yellow over time,” explains Gündling. “We provide a 30-year guarantee that our clear ACRYLITE® Premium (FF) panels may show minimal yellow values that are not perceptible to the human eye over-time.”

A protective shield for pictures, too

Light, transparent, and resistant - ACRYLITE® Gallery products protect photographs and other valuable artworks from damage, dust, ultraviolet rays, glare and scratches.

Museum display cases

Works of art in museums need to be presented in the most appealing way possible. Display cases made from ACRYLITE® acrylic sheet blend into the background and offer a clear view of the exhibits.

Display cases made with select types of ACRYLITE® acrylic can also protect exhibits from ultraviolet rays by blocking almost 100% of harmful rays. “We offer a special acrylic product called, ACRYLITE® Gallery UV filtering (OP3) for this application,” comments Gündling. “The UV protection offered by this material is up to 40% higher than that of conventional glass.” This acrylic is used not only in display cases but also for picture glazing of valuable artwork. For surfaces that constantly come into contact with visitors, ACRYLITE® Gallery UV filtering mar-resistant (OP3 MR1) is a scratch-proof and chemical-resistant material that stands up to public contact and frequent cleaning.

ACRYLITE® – a real lightweight

Acrylic is far lighter than glass – an advantage that is particularly desirable for displays that may hang. “ACRYLITE® acrylic weighs half as much as glass, making it much easier to fix to the wall,” says Gündling. It can also be machined more easily than conventional glass and has excellent properties for forming. As a result, display cases can be fabricated into a large range of shapes and sizes – from classic cubes to spectacular giant snow globes.

Shaped cases for custom protection

ACRYLITE® acrylic is easy to form. For example, it can be line-bent into the U-profiles from which HLS Berg GmbH & Co. KG manufactures its accessible "Train-Safe" display case system.
