Subtle fumes from acrylic sheet

Roehm America LLC's ACRYLITE® acrylic sheet is cut using methods ranging from saw cutting to laser cutting. Acrylic sheet can melt if sufficient heat is generated during the saw cutting operations. In laser cutting, the laser beam depolymerizes the acrylic in its path - converting it back into its chemical constituents. Some customers have complained about the sweet smell generated by acrylic when cutting. This is rare in saw cutting since, if done correctly, melting should be minimal. There are no known hazards associated with the fumes generated from saw cutting ACRYLITE® sheet. When employing laser cutting, substantial fumes are generated and these must be properly collected and handled to control exposures to acceptable levels.

Dust from ACRYLITE® acrylic sheet is essentially the same as wood dust. The safety data sheet (SDS) can be downloaded from our web site. The SDS shows that there are no known hazards associated with working with our material. If the dust makes you uncomfortable or is irritant, you can wear a simple dust mask.
